Clinical Sociolinguistics

Product Description
Clinical Sociolinguistics examines how sociolinguistic research paradigms can be applied to assessment, diagnosis and treatment in the clinical situation.Clinical Sociolinguistics Review
I was attracted to this title as a primary text for a course in Sociocultural Communication for speech-language pathology students. The title sounded perfect. So far (half way through the semester), I've found several chapters to be useful, brief, overviews from which we could build class discussion around. The topics listed in the contents span an appropriately broad range, and none of the chapters is particularly long. I have been assigning two chapters at a time. My biggest criticism is that the scope and depth varies significantly across the chapters, which are each written by a different author. While many chapters are introductory, others jump in at much higher levels that frustrate students new to the material. I found the chapter on culture and language particularly disappointing. It was also pretty apparent that in many of the chapters the clinical part was an afterthought. However, on the positive side, many of the big concepts (e.g., speech community, power, dialect) and specific clinical concepts (e.g., dialect development, non-biased assessment issues, bilingualism, etc.) are laid out well and the chapters are manageable. The chapters on AAE are good introductions.I'm not sure if I will continue to use this as a primary text or just select chapters from it. There is still no one text, in my opinion, that adequately covers the breadth and depth of this topic, particularly the theoretical foundations, for clinical practioners or educators.
