This is a very comprehensive, thorough treatment of American history. Yes, it's a textbook, but it's still interesting enough to be a decent read.I rented this book to study for both the American History I and American History II CLEP exams. This wasn't my only source of study material, but this was the most comprehensive. (I also used the CliffNote Quick Review books, which are excellent.) I'm pleased to say I passed both exams with flying colors.
Part of the reason I chose this particular book was that (a) it is available for rental at what I think is a reasonable price; and (b) it's available in Kindle format, so I didn't have to lug around a dead-tree book. This book is pretty long, despite its claim to being concise, so it would be a pretty heavy book.
I was personally interested in one particular photograph. At the beginning of the section relating to the post-World War II housing/baby boom, it features a photo of my hometown (Lakewood, CA), taken about 1952. Fun!
All things considered, I'm very happy with this rental.
