Korean: A Comprehensive Grammar (Comprehensive Grammars) Review

Anybody who has tried to learn Korean will know that unlike other more popular languages, resources for learning Korean are very scarce, and good resources among those scarce ones are extremely rare. Before purchasing Korean: A Comprehensive Grammar, I had already tried learning Korean with three other books, yet no matter how much I read into those other books, I never really felt like I had a solid understanding of the Korean language. In fact, I would often come across grammatical constructions that I had never even seen mentioned in a single book. Also, most other Korean books are written in a haphazard style, where one is left with an unclear view of how the language works and how similar constructions and patterns relate to each other. Korean: A Comprehensive Grammar is the opposite of all those books.

Korean: A Comprehensive Grammar is first of all a beautifully structured book, neatly dividing the Korean language into clear, logical categories. The authors understand that Korean is a very unique language, and so have taken care of not ham-fisting it into typical European language structures, and have carefully created unique categories for Korean's unique structures. Chapters 2-4 deal with the basics common to most languages: nouns, pronouns, particles (think the Korean equivalent of prepositions), and verbs. Chapter 5, however, begins the more Korean-specific topics with Auxiliary Verbs, which in Korean take a whole different purpose than in English and other languages. Chapter 6 deals with Clausal Connectives which are the many different schemes that Korean uses to link sentences in a variety of logical relations. Chapter 7 deals with Modifiers, which refers to the structures Korean employs in turning verbs into noun modifiers since Korean has no adjectives but actually has structures to turn verbs and their related clause into descriptive phrases. Chapter 8 deals with Sentence Endings, which are different sentence termination schemes used to convey a variety of subtle meanings. Chapter 9 deals with Quotations or forms of address which are structures for indicating information that is being quoted either directly or indirectly; these quotation schemes take on very unique functions in the Korean language. Finally Chapter 10 deals with miscellaneous Korean structures.

I guess the best review I could give this book is the fact that since I started using it, my Korean friends (currently residing in Seoul) have complimented me various times in how well I can express myself in Korean.

When I started reading Korean: A Comprehensive Grammar, the first thing I noticed is how many things I had learned incorrectly through the guidance (or misguidance, or lack of any kind of guidance) from my other books. I found myself unlearning a lot of bad knowledge and finally learning the true meaning and rules behind the many grammatical structures found in real Korean. I also finally learned all of the different patterns that I had seen in real Korean yet had never fully understood with the other books. A lot of things felt like they finally "clicked" in my mind; I've had a lot of "Oh, so that's what that means!" moments with this book.

After spending some dedicated time with this book, I can now confidently experience real Korean (through TV shows, comics, tweets, online news, books, etc.) and understand all the grammatical structures at work in each sentence. Even before I look up all the words I don't know in the dictionary, I can browse a sentence and understand the grammatical relationships between the words; and once one can do that with a language, the rest is just a matter of "filling in the blanks" with dedicated vocabulary study.

Korean: A Comprehensive Grammar is true to its name: it details all the skills you need to know to understand the grammar you're bound to find in real-world Korean. Before closing, I would like to comment on what a fellow reviewer wrote. Mr. "robert m. ginns" has given the book a 1 star rating because it allegedly does not measure up to other books in the "Comprehensive Grammar" series. Mr. ginns's argument is irrelevant. He fails to realize that Korean is a unique language, and as such has a unique approach to grammar learning, and therefore has its own unique style of "Comprehensive Grammar" book. Comparing this book to other "Comprehensive Grammars" is meaningless, because they deal with different languages. Again, the best review I can ever give this book is the fact that since reading it I have received praise from real Seoul Koreans and that I can now understand all the grammatical structures at work in real world Korean.

This book is THE best Korean grammar book available this side of the Pacific. If you are serious about learning Korean, buy this. Now. Well deserved 5 stars for this book. The best Korean language purchase I've made yet.
